20 FACTS ABOUT TITANIC

April 15th, 1912. This year makes it 111yrs ago when the then World's Largest Moving Object ever made “Royal Mail Steamer Titanic” aka The TITANIC sank.

1. She was the largest moving object for her age. Because of the advent of new technologies today it may be hard to appreciate the size of the Titanic but for her age & time she was a global object of fascination. Over 100,000 people attended her launch. She weighed 46,000 tons.

2. The Titanic consumed 825 tons of charcoal per day. That's huge!

3. She carried 2,224 passengers & crew members.

4. In the year 1910, it cost $7M to build the Titanic. That's some $200M in today's money.

5. During Titanic's construction, 246 injuries were recorded, 28 of them "severe", such as arms severed by machines or legs crushed under falling pieces of steel. Six people died on the ship herself while she was being constructed and fitted out, and another two died in the shipyard workshops and sheds.

6. The ship took over two years to build. The ship took 26 months to build. Construction crews used 3

million iron and steel rivets to build the 26,000-ton hull. Among the last items to be fitted on Titanic before the ship's were her two side anchors and one centre anchor.

7. The anchors themselves were a challenge to make, with the centre anchor being the largest ever forged by hand and weighing nearly 16 tons. Twenty Clydesdale draught horses were needed to haul the centre anchor by wagon from the Noah Hingley & Sons Ltd forge shop in Netherton, near Dudley, United Kingdom to the Dudley railway station two miles away. From there it was shipped by rail to Fleetwood in Lancashire before being loaded aboard a ship and sent to Belfast in 1911.

8. There were 40,000 fresh eggs aboard the ship. In other words, there were roughly 3,333 dozens of eggs on the Titanic, a majority of which likely went down with the ship.

9. The Titanic had over 10,000 light bulbs.

10. It took over 70 years to find the Titanic after she

sank.

11. The ship went down with over 1,500 souls in her, alive.

12. There was plenty of liquor and cigars onboard. There were 20,000 bottles of beer and 1,500 bottles of wine stocked on the ship. In addition to plentiful alcohol, there were 8,000 cigars onboard.

13. There were at least 13 couples on the Titanic celebrating their honeymoon.

14. The youngest passenger on the Titanic was 2 months old. Millvina Dean was the youngest passenger aboard the ship and the longest living survivor. She died at the age of 97 in May 2009.

15. Three feature films were made about the Titanic. Jean Negulesco's "Titanic" was made in

1953, Roy Baker's "A Night to Remember" was made in 1958, and James Cameron's "Titanic" was made in 1997 (the most popular).

16. After hitting the iceberg at 11:40 pm (ship's time) 14th of April 1912 on her maiden voyage, it took the Titanic 2 hours & 40 minutes at the early hours of 15th of April 1922 before sinking.

17. There were at least 12 dogs on the ship. Only three survived.

18. Only 3 of the 4 funnels of the Titanic actually carried engine smoke, the other was for ventilation & also served as a kitchen chimney.

19. The air temperature when the Titanic sank was around 4.1°C and within 15 minutes some passengers lost their lives.

The rescuers analyzed that in 50°F, 50% of the victims will die within 50 minutes. 

20. James Cameron, the producer of "Titanic" 1997 spent more time with the ship than the actual passengers. He went under the Atlantic Ocean to take over 100,000 photographs of the ship.

He came back, built 90% size of the original Titanic ship (replica) & used it to film the movie. The parts of the ship props were sold in anauction.
